About the Authors

Marty and GaryMartha (“Marty”) Harding and Gary Noren found inspiration for this book in the words of poet Mary Oliver: “Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.”

They were certainly astonished when a pair of Sandhill Cranes arrived in their backyard—with not just a colt, but also a surprise companion: a Canada gosling! Captivated, they followed this remarkable blended family for three years, marveling at the powerful bonds of love and belonging that held them together. Now, they share that story through Marty’s words and Gary’s photographs.

Marty is a writer, musician, and educator. Adopted as a child, she brings a deep personal connection to this story of inclusion and family in all its forms.
Gary is a photographer, environmentalist, and teacher. His images reflect a lifelong passion for inspiring children and adults to discover the wonders of nature close to home.

Living on Green Lake near Chisago City, MN, Marty and Gary explore the outdoors by foot, bike, and canoe—Marty with her binoculars, Gary with his camera. Now retired, they volunteer with nonprofit organizations supporting conservation, historic preservation, and the arts in the St. Croix River watershed.
